Here's something interesting that I found in Road and Track's Guide to the All New 300zx... ""Like the other departments," Mr. (Akira) Ishii (head of the engine development program) recalls, "we also had a program called 901. We set three targets depending on the type of car and customer. First, for the dyed-in-the-wool enthusiast, we envisioned a turbo motor. Second, for high performance with a high level of refinement, we saw the non-turbo UZ engine. Third, we looked ahead to other more practical characteristics; that is, to powertrain applications in other than sports cars." More interesting info from Datsun 280 Nissan 300 ZX by Brian Long. "During Development, it had been hoped that the VQ30 engine could be used, but this was found to be too tight a fit. The VH45 V8 from the Infiniti was also considered and rejected. Instead, the existing VG unit was developed further. Since that engine was the more admired feature of the Z31 series, no one seemed to think that this was a bad move; to most it was the natural solution." Just presenting some data I found, not taking any sides on this one.
